Hand Held Audio goes live online
Continued >>>

Founder member and director of Hand Held Audio, Mick Shepherd, is pleased with the new development. "We've been specialists in the high end touring and more recently corporate markets right from the very beginning and will continue to be so," he said, "but we hope that the website will enable us to reach a new sector of the market where we have never before had a presence, and yet for whom wireless and in-ear technology is becoming increasingly available. We'd like to pass on the benefits of our experience, our buying power and our considerable technical support resources to the MI and semi-professional sector."

We also feel that it will offer existing customers a quick and convenient way to maintain supplies of spares and accessories or indeed any wireless equipment that may be required in a hurry. It can be infuriating to discover you're one aerial short for an important job, but the website will enable orders to be placed at any time of day or night, and the goods will be dispatched within 24 hours."

The new site is designed to be a one-stop online store dedicated purely to radio microphones and all things wireless. As well as an extensive product catalogue from a wide range of manufacturers the site will also offer comprehensive technical support and advice on how to go about setting up your system.

"Wireless technology can be a bit daunting at first," says Mick, "so what we're aiming to do here is demystify the process and offer a good service into the bargain. Customers will have access to a great range of products at extremely competitive prices, advice on what is best suited to their needs, secure online purchasing and next-day delivery, plus all the usual guarantees and technical support. And once customers have registered their details we'll send out a newsletter once a month to keep them abreast of the latest news and developments."

UB40 Ears

UB40 have been using Micro Monitors since they first got involved with In Ear Monitoring back in the early nineties. They were using Garwood systems then but have since changed to Shure. They've remained happy with their earpieces although it's doubtful if any of their original Micro Monitors are still in use.
The ten-strong band have a fairly hectic stage and accidents will happen. Jimmy Innes called the other day with a familiar message.

"Nick, there's another set of ears broke, can you fix 'em?"

The schedule is punishing too. Having thoroughly covered Europe and the U.K. they are now in South Africa and going on to the middle east before coming home to play open air shows with Santana in Dublin and London.

Riverdance in Paris

The French variety show called "Le Grand Cabaret" boasted Naomi Campbell and Prince Albert of Monaco as members of its audience. They were enthralled as the dancers performed the "Trading Taps" sequence from the main Riverdance show.

The flying squad consists of 3 Irish and 2 U.S. dancers. Each wear a dual tap-mic transmitter system comprising of 2 Audio Technica AT350 lavalier mics positioned in the in-step of their tap shoes. The mics, which are specially made for Hand Held Audio with extra long cables, are fed into a Shure U1 belt pack transmitter.

Maurice reported that the show went off without a hitch when he turned up at Hand Held the following morning. His right arm was perhaps slightly longer from carrying the radio mic system as hand baggage on the flight back.

Jubilee Concert Planning

The initial wireless specifications for the Jubilee concerts on the 1st and 3rd of June call for Hand Held Audio to provide 28 radio microphones and 14 in ear monitor systems.

This is in addition to 32 "personal" radio mic systems from the BBC for its' presenters and a huge communications system. This is keeping Richard Kemp from the BBC, The JFMG licensing organisation and Nick Bruce-Smith from Hand Held extremely well occupied at the moment. Nick has recently been heard to describe the build up to these concerts as "challenging".

The "Proms at the Palace" classical concert scheduled for June 1st requires 12 radio mics comprising 8 beta87 hand helds and 4 lavaliers, in addition to 2 in ear systems. For the "Party at the Palace" rock and pop concert on bank holiday Monday June 3rd the specification is for 16 beta58 hand held systems and 12 in ear systems.

Hand Held plan to put in a separate system for each event.
